I realised that the blog post I wrote after my tap class last night, whilst on the train home, uploaded before I’d finished it (the WiFi kept dropping in and out), so if you’re a subscriber, you probably got the abridged version in your inbox! To read the full post, click here!
It only took me 5 weeks to realise we’ve been dancing to Radiohead’s Creep! Although, to be fair, we’ve been using a cover version. But this evening a member of the class played it for us on the piano for our performances in front of the other half of the class (plus a practice all together)! Very cool, very nicely played.
I went a bit wrong when we were dancing in front of the other half of the group, but hey ho, that’s dance class! The more you dance in front of an audience, the better. I have to admit I found it easier to perform Street dance in front of an audience. In fact I did, two years in a row at ‘Sutton’s Got Talent’! (There is DVD evidence).
In the last few minutes our teacher asked if there’s anything else we’d like to do so I piped up with “call and response” (I’m so keen). That was good fun! It literally keeps you on your toes.
Told my teacher at the end that I couldn’t get onto the next block of Wednesday evenings, but that I booked onto the Thursday day instead. I also told her that I’m going to the Tap UK Festival 🇬🇧 in Manchester next weekend! More on this later, but in brief: I’m really excited, there’s a show Friday night, I’ll be doing about 3 classes on the Saturday morning, and yes people, there will be AFRO FUNK!! 🎶
Since I’ve moved house, been getting more sleep and have cut out the frothy coffees (as of the weekend) I’m feeling a lot more awake – Yippee! Tomorrow’s ballet is my last class of the year (boo!) but that will give me some evenings in to get back on my stretches before returning to Tap in January 🙂
OMG, just bought tickets for Tap Factory on 3rd November! Can’t wait!!!
I haven’t done ballet in over a year, so just checking if I’ve still got it LOL. Even if I don’t sign up to a class in the autumn, I have several DVDs of traditional ballet barre class (and some that are more of a fitness workout) as you can see below!
Actually, my achilles tendons are aching a lot and I need to sort out my posture and alignment…head to toe!

Ok, I have to admit it. I’m burnt out. I have missed two weeks of Tap classes and am also missing tonight’s class because I am off work and have zero energy. Although I felt I had to go because I’d been telling my teacher for two weeks that I’d be back “next week” and hadn’t been, and it’s the final class of term, I just knew it wouldn’t be sensible to go. I need the rest.
I’ve had a lot on my plate over the last few months. A lot of my stress is work-related, but I need to stay employed so I figured it would be better to not burn myself out further tonight at a class so I can actually go to work tomorrow!
Another aspect of burnout that I’ve been reading about is that a lot of dancers hold very high standards for themselves and can end up overdoing it by signing up to too many classes and not having enough recovery or even overdoing it at each class when the fitness level is not there yet. Of course there are other factors like getting enough sleep and nutrients, but you must listen to your body. Must!
I think a good thing for me to do would be a yoga type class for relaxation and stress relief, while also aiding flexibility and strength.
Next week will be the first of our tap workshops, so I’m going to rest up so that I’m back in the zone for learning the Shim Sham!
